Preparing for Your Wedding Cake Consultation

Because there are so many options, we recommend an initial appointment to discuss flavors, designs, and budgets. Here are some of our most frequently asked questions to help you before we meet.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring any ideas for the cake design that you have in mind. Bring pictures from magazines, books, websites, any place that inspires you. Be sure and bring along color swatches so that the designers can match your cake to your wedding colors.

How much will my wedding cake cost?

As a general rule, you can plan on $2.50 - $5 per serving depending on the design. We will work with you to stay within your budget. A 20% down payment is due at the initial meeting to confirm your order. Other costs may include equipment rental, delivery and setup charges. If you do not wish to confirm the order but are looking for a  general idea of cost, we are happy to schedule  a 10 minute appointment  or phone call for you so that your questions can be answered. A final written quote will only be given when the order is placed.

What flavors of cakes and fillings can I choose from?

Our standard cake offerings include marble, chocolate, or cream (white). Other specialty flavors include banana, maple nut, carrot, mint chocolate and Tres Leches.(no matter the flavor, any way you slice it - it's delicious!) Fillings include, but are not limited to, bavarian cream,  chocolate bavaian cream, butter cream, lemon, raspberry, strawberry, pineapple, chocolate butter cream and Holland cream. If you have something else in mind, just ask, because chances are it's something we can do.

Can I have more than just one flavor?

Yes, every tier can be different.

Can I bring in cakes or other desserts from other sources to compliment our wedding cake?

Yes, If you are offering cheese cake or another sweets that we don't offer at our bakery; however we ask that all kitchen cakes and sheet cakes come from our bakery as we work very hard to produce an extraordinary product and don't want to confuse guests by giving them something they think came from our bakery which in reality did not.

Can I use fresh or silk flowers?

Yes, you are welcome to use fresh or silk flowers. Simply make arrangements with Ryke's or your florist to place them on the cake after it has been delivered to the reception.

When should I place my order?

It’s best to have your order placed by Christmas for a Spring or Summer Wedding or by Easter for a Fall or Winter Wedding to ensure availability. Keep in mind that getting appointments during the "Wedding Season", which in West Michigan is May 1st through October 31st,  can sometimes be difficult.

What are groom's cakes and do you make them?

We absolutely prepare groom's cakes! The groom's cake is an old English tradition where small pieces of cake, generally dark, rich, liquor-saturated fruit cake, were boxed and given to the unmarried female guests to take home and place under their pillow. The myth promised that while sleeping with the cake under her pillow, she would dream of the man she would marry.

This tradition took hold in the southern United States and has slowly migrated to the rest of the country. In the U.S., the groom's cake is usually a chocolate cake decorated to represent the groom's hobbies, career, or with a fun, contemporary design, and is often the dessert after the rehearsal dinner or can be displayed with the wedding cake. Check out our Groom's Cakes Gallery for some samples of Groom's Cakes that we have created.
